Has anyone ever been to Aviano Air Force Base in Italy? My husband and I will be moving there in August and I have no idea where to even start. We have a dog that we cannot leave behind!

Hey Heidi,
I have been through Aviano but was just there a few days waiting for another Space-A flight to England. I wish I could have stayed longer, it is absolutely beautiful there! Northern Italy is truly a historic and stunning place, and being surrounded by the mountains is really scenic. The base seems to be split into two areas with the local village dividing it, but there are shuttle buses that seem to run every 20 minutes or so and go to everything. The commissary and BX had a lot to offer, and the billeting was extremely nice. We stayed at the guest lodge on Aviano and it was one of the nicer military lodges we have ever been to AND your dog will be welcome for an additional charge.

You will have so much fun there, you can get everywhere and to every other country by short train rides. I'm jealous!! I love Europe, there is so much to see and so much history. Businesses and restaurants in European countries are also a lot more pet-friendly, and many of them welcome you to bring your dog with you.

Here is a link to the Aviano pet policies and some other info:

Good luck, and enjoy your time in Italy, you are very lucky!!

We have had several friends stationed there. Major Steven Black and his family were stationed there as was Dr. Michele Delanty of Spokane, WA. Both are dentists. If you look them up I am sure they and their spouse would be happy to share their experiences with you.
